Tomatoes are an amazing fruit – yes, fruit. Not only are they absolutely delicious, but tomatoes are also packed with vitamins and boast a lengthy list of health benefits. Thanks to their high levels of vitamin A, regularly eating tomatoes can lead to clearer skin, stronger hair, and better vision, just to name a few. Many studies have even linked tomatoes to cancer prevention!
That’s why we’re here to show you how to grow your very own tomato plants. All you’ll need is a pot, dirt, and a sliced tomato. Let’s jump right in!
You’ll want to start with a large pot and fill it almost to the top with damp, nutrient-rich soil. Trust me, your tomatoes will thank you. Since you’re using a pot and not planting these in the ground, you’ll want to make sure your tomato plants will get plenty of drainage. Try adding a thin layer of rocks to the bottom of the pot and make sure that there are holes in the bottom to let the water drain through.
Next, cut up one tomato into thick slices, about a 1/4 inches thick. I would recommend using a ripe tomato, as this will help your plant sprout sooner. Place the slices on top of the soil and then add another layer of dirt on top. You’ll want your slices to just barely be covered so you can longer see them without adding too much dirt on top.
After about a week and half of growth, you’ll want to transplant each of your tomato slices to a different pot so that they don’t overcrowd one another. Following the same steps, you’ll want to keep them in a large pot with damp soil and bury them only slightly with dirt.
Pro-tip: Tomatoes love water – you’ll definitely need to give them plenty of water especially in these first few days in their own pot. Once they begin to grow more fully, you’ll want to lower their watering down to about 2 inches of water per week. Don’t forget to regularly add organic compost to your tomatoes to give them that extra boost!
